Overcrowded timetables, a growing teacher shortage and changing demands. Education is creaking and calling for a different approach. In a recent parliamentary letter (open or download here the Dutch version), the minister and state secretary report that the teacher shortage in primary, secondary and intermediate vocational education remains stubborn and structural, despite all efforts.
In primary education the shortage is 7,700 FTEs (8.1%), in secondary it is 3,800 FTEs (5.1%) and in secondary schools shortages have been measured up to 4.1%. Especially in large cities, 17% of schools are even facing shortages of more than 30%. The parliamentary letter states that this problem will persist in the coming years unless we make fundamentally different choices. Postponing is no longer an option, we have to act smart and people-oriented now.
At the same time, boards and schools are looking for innovation, without sacrificing people or resources. What if we do things differently? What if educational renewal and organisational development come together in one movement?

For example: a teacher who gets stuck in red tape during parent meetings brings this up on Canvas. Together, they look at how processes can be simplified and how AI can make suggestions, without losing human contact. AI suggested using the Canvas as a standard for parent communication. This immediately saved time and made contact more personal, fun and effective. The solutions are there for the taking, you just have to want to see them and dare to feel them.
